Storms on Saturday could bring damaging winds

Steamy weather has returned to the city and it’s going to help make for strong thunderstorms.

On Saturday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., rounds of storms are likely. These storms could bring damaging winds. Gusts could top 50 mph and there could be downed trees. Be careful in the parks. Also, there could be power outages, especially on Staten Island.

Along with the wind, frequent lightning and downpours are expected. There could be flash flooding in spots, as well as small hail.

Airport delays will be extensive on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night in the region. Remember the best place to be during a storm is inside and away from windows. The worst places to be are on a roof, in a pool or at the beach, in parks or under a tree.

Underground subway stations can make great shelters to ride out a storm. Typically, these storms only last 15 to 20 minutes before moving on. 

Before the storms on Saturday, it will be warm and humid with hazy sunshine and windy conditions. 

For Sunday: It will be cooler and mostly cloudy. Also, passing light rain is likely in the morning. 

This is the final weekend for city pools. Also, this is the last weekend that lifeguards will be at area beaches.
