An Uber driver was shot and killed inside his vehicle in the Bronx, in what police say is New York City’s first homicide of 2026.
The victim, identified as Issa Issak, 55, was an African immigrant who worked as a rideshare driver. His body was found early Thursday morning, shortly before 7 a.m., inside his car on Morris Avenue in the Mount Hope neighborhood, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
The New York City Fire Department responded to reports of a vehicle fire and discovered Issak’s body inside the car. Investigators believe he was attacked while returning home after completing his overnight shift, possibly following a minor traffic collision.
Surveillance footage shows a man attempting to strike the vehicle’s window, after which Issak tried to drive away. The suspects then pursued the car and opened fire, police said.
No arrests have been made so far. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify and locate those responsible. Meanwhile, a livery drivers’ association has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
